Aaj bāzār meñ pā-ba-jaulāñ chalo by Faiz - Captivity as a badge of honour

My tryst with this powerful nazm, in particular, and Faiz Ahmad Faiz's poetry in general, started in 1993-94 when a friend gave me a video cassette of the film "Muhafiz", directed by Ismail Merchant under Merchant Ivory Productions. The film was based on Anita Desai's novel In Custody, and was simultaneously made in English as "In Custody". The protagonist, played by Shashi Kapoor, is an Urdu poet, Nur. To match the stature of the film's protagonist, Faiz Ahmad Faiz's poetry was chosen to fill in as the songs and occasional recitals by the Shayar.

To be honest, with my below par knowledge of Urdu diction, most of the poetry used in the film did not make much sense to me at the time and that prompted me to take understanding Faiz as a challenge. I studied about Faiz, his left leaning political beliefs, his defiance and refusal to bend before tyranny, leading to imprisonment and a long exile. I kept working on improving my understanding of the Urdu diction and now, after more that a quarter of a century, I understand Faiz to some extent. It would be arrogance to claim that I understand Faiz very well, but I am able to make some sense of his poetry.

Coming to this particular nazm, there is a background story. While in Jail, Faiz had some trouble with his teeth. He was taken out of the prison, tied in chains, and was driven to a dentist on an open horse-cart. Some people recognised Faiz and followed the cart. He could have felt embarrassed but, on the contrary, he thought of his captivity - symbolised by the chain - as a badge of honour since he was fighting for a cause. And that produced this magical nazm. 'Pa-ba-jaulan' means feet in fetters.

I am going to share my thoughts and my interpretation of the nazm. I have tried to translate it as best as I can, with a combination of the literal meaning and contextual meaning of the terms. The translation is followed by my (unaided) interpretation of the nazm. Here it goes:

chashm-nam jān-e-shorīda kaafī nahīñ
tohmat-e-ishq-poshīda kaafī nahīñ
aaj bāzār meñ pā-ba-jaulāñ chalo
Moist eyes, and troubled existence will not suffice
The charge of concealed love will not suffice
Today, in shackles, let’s walk in the market place

These lines are Faiz’s clarion call for an open and forceful defiance. Tohmat-e-ishq-posheeda is symbolic of a mild offence, and moist eyes with a troubled existence represent a subdued response to tyranny. Walking in chains is like being openly rebellious.

dast-afshāñ chalo mast o raqsāñ chalo
ḳhāk-bar-sar chalo ḳhūñ-ba-dāmāñ chalo
raah taktā hai sab shahr-e-jānāñ chalo
Walk on, with palms open, as if dancing in frenzy, walk on
Ignoring the dust in the head, and the blood-soaked garb, walk on.The beloved city yearns for you, just walk on.

Once you stand up to tyranny, the pain and suffering evaporates. The open palm and the frenzied dance are the defiant response to the dust and blood on the body, the symbols of tortuous captivity.  shahr-e-jānāñ is a term traditionally used for the city of beloved. But here the term is more inclusive, embracing all the oppressed and dispossessed. (Remember the Marxist theory that there are only two types of people - the 'haves' and the 'have-nots'?)

hākim-e-shahr bhī majma-e-ām bhī
tīr-e-ilzām bhī sañg-e-dushnām bhī
sub.h-e-nāshād bhī roz-e-nākām bhī
From the ‘haakim’ to the commoners, let them watch
The barbs of accusations, stones of abuses, let them come
The morns of heartbreak, the days of failure, let them be
Just walk on.
Now, with the knowledge that Faiz was driven by revolutionary ideology, these lines can be viewed the quest for externalisation of rebellion, exposing it to everyone, from the hākim, the instrument of exploitation, to the suffering common people. In the process, the poet feels, a revolutionary has to be ready for accusation, pain, and frustration and has to carry on, unfazed.

un kā dam-sāz apne sivā kaun hai
shahr-e-jānāñ meñ ab bā-safā kaun hai
dast-e-qātil ke shāyāñ rahā kaun hai
raḳht-e-dil bāñdh lo dil-figāro chalo
phir hamīñ qatl ho aa.eñ yaaro chalo
Who else, if not you, is their intimate friend?
Who, if not you, is pure in soul to offer a cure?
Who, if not you, is worthy of the executioner’s axe?
Pack the treasures of heart, come all broken hearted, let’s go
Once more, let’s go and be executed, come friends, let’s go

Faiz believes that those with the ability to understand and comprehend the methods of oppression are best equipped to lead and cannot shy away or steer clear of troubles. Who else, but they, are suited and equipped to offer to lead, and make sacrifices. It may appear that the poem ends in despair with phir hamīñ qatl ho aa.eñ yaaro chalo. But the revolutionary knows that the sacrifices of today are inevitable pointers to a future of hope and delight.

This is a brilliant piece of poetry not only by the content, but also due to the format - the poetic diction and imagery - perfectly matching the content. The use of adjectives nam for chashm and poshida for ishq is absolutely brilliant for subdued and oppressed existence. Use of chalo as a recurring refrain creates a perfect sound. The imagery like  ḳhāk-bar-sar and ḳhūñ-ba-dāmāñ to depict a captive being dragged is brilliant.

I do not know why, these lines reminded me of a she’r from Zafar’s “baat karni mujhe mushkil”, another one about captivity. Let me quote:
pā-e-kūbāñ koī zindāñ meñ nayā hai majnūñ
aatī āvāz-e-salāsil kabhī aisī to na thī
(pā-e-kūbāñ – foot of an instrument used for beating mortar for construction; zindan – prison; awaz-e-salasil – sound of chains)
For Zafar, the chain symbolises the resigned lament over captivity, for Faiz it is a badge of honour, a symbol of defiance. Two great poets of different eras, different circumstances, different contexts and different responses.

I am closing this write up with a she'r of Faiz. A genius makes his mark and creates a trajectory in whatever he does:
jo ruke to koh-e-girāñ the ham jo chale to jaañ se guzar ga.e
rah-e-yār ham ne qadam qadam tujhe yādgār banā diyā

I am sharing the link to a video recording of Faiz himself reciting this nazm.

Tu Chanda Main Chandni : As Love Blossoms in the Desert

This favourite song of mine is Tu Chanda Main Chandni from the film Reshma Aur Shera (1971), penned by Balkavi Bairagi, composed by Jaidev and sung by Lata Mangeshkar. The film, produced and directed by Sunil Dutt, had Sunil Dutt and Waheeda Rehman in lead roles. This was their second film together after the immortal classic Mujhe Jeene Do(1963), another Sunil Dutt production. Ironically, unlike Mujhe Jeene Do,  which too had music by Jaidev and was commercially successful, Reshma Aur Shera did not do well at the box office. However, its music, particularly this song lives on in the hearts and minds of music lovers. Jaidev won the 1972 National Award for the Best Music Director for Reshma Aur Shera. In spite of the commercial failure, the film was well received by the critics internationally. It was nominated for the Golden Bear at the 22nd Berlin International Film Festival. It was also selected as the Indian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 44th Academy Awards but was not accepted as a nominee.

Tu Chanda Main Chandni is one of the best songs composed by Jaidev and one of the best sung by Lataji. When I say one of the best by Lataji, there is a possibility of many friends disagreeing as almost entire body of work by Lataji would qualify as 'great'. I would try to explain why, in my view, this song stands out. Lataji's voice kept evolving throughout her phenomenal career. Although she had stepped into singing  after proper training in classical music, she became more and more accomplished as her career progressed. In the early '70s, after a career of nearly 24-25 years, she was at her peak - the divine sweetness and youthfulness of the voice absolutely intact and the craft fully blossomed - after having sung a wide variety of songs with all the great composers (with the sole exception of O P Nayyar). Jaidev has presented this magical quality to perfection in this song.

The setting of the film is in Rajasthan and Jaidev has composed this song in Raag Mand, the one in which the popular folk song Kesariya Balam has been traditionally sung. His brilliance is further demonstrated in his choice of instruments. He has chosen santoor, sarangi and flute, and the fusion of the three is absolutely mesmerizing, in complete sync with the setting of a quiet desert night, the backdrop of the picturisation. Unlike a typical film song, the lyrics are in lines of irregular length, without a rhyming pattern, but still have a lyrical flow. I wonder how incredibly difficult it would have been for the lyricist to conform to the tune and for the composer to place the words, unusual for film songs, in matras of the taal. There is a huge challenge for a singer to sing lines with asymmetrical length in a flow. Still there is unwavering command, not one false surThere are lines where all the instruments have gone silent and Lataji's voice comes across as if echoing in a soundless desert. The last line in each stanza has been sung three times, each time with a different style, with brief instrumental interlude in between.

The combined brilliance of Balkavi Bairagi, the lyricist, and Jaidev lies in the way the song has covered the process of blossoming of love. The three stanzas of the song cover three stages, and I need to quote the lines to explain this.

The first stanza, the first phase, is that of longing and expectation.
naa sarovar, naa baava.Dii, naa koI Tha.nDii chhaa.nv
naa koyal, naa papiiharaa, aisaa meraa gaa.nv re
kahaa.N bujhe tan kii tapan, o saiyaa.n siramor
cha.ndra-kiran to chho.D kar, jaae kahaa.N chakor
jaag uThii hai saa.nvare, merii kuaa.nrii pyaas re
(piyaa) a.ngaare bhii lagane lage aaj mujhe madhumaas re

The life without a beloved is like a desolate desert but the hope of meeting the beloved piya is so soothing that angaare too start giving the feel of a soothing madhumaas.

The next stage is about the set of emotions awakened after the love arrives in life.
tujhe aa.nchal mai.n rakhuu.Ngii o saa.nvare
kaalii alako.n se baa.Ndhuu.Ngii ye paa.nv re
gal baiyaa.N vo Daaluu.n kii chhuuTe nahii.n
meraa sapanaa saajan ab TuuTe nahii.n
me.nhadii rachii hatheliyaa.N, mere kaajar-vaale nain re
(piyaa) pal pal tujhe pukaarate, ho ho kar bechain re

The next stage is when the two lovers meet and Balkavi Bairagi has made excellent choice of words to express restrained sensuousness:
apane haatho.n se piyaa mujhe laal chunar u.Dhaa
kesariyaa dharatii lage, ambar laalam-laal re
a.ng lagaa kar saahib re, kar de mujhe nihaal re

Since Balkavi Bairagi was a poet, not just a wordsmith like a typical Bollywood lyricist, the song has the essential elements of proper poetry. The diction is suitable for the characters and the setting. The use of metaphors (like chandrakiran, chakor), and the imagery - like a life devoid of love likened to a gaon without a sarovar, bawadi and thandi chhaon - are absolutely brilliant.

So, here is a song where every single element, each component, each individual has contributed in making this a brilliant piece of music. Let us not forget, also, the unsung heroes, the musicians who have played the instrument.

There are two versions of the song. One with all the three stanzas is available in the audio format. In the on-screen version only the last two stanzas have been taken. I am sharing the link to the longer version.

[For the trivia lovers, Jaidev won the 1972 National Award for the Best Music Director for Reshma Aur Shera, which was the first of his three National Awards which he won again in 1979 and 1985 for Gaman and Ankahee respectively. He has the distinction of bagging three National Awards without winning a single Filmfare. Another great composer, Madan Mohan, was awarded the National Film Award for Best Music Direction, without winning a single Filmfare (in spite of being nominated four times) for Dastak in 1970.]

"Jaago Mohan Pyaare" [Jagte Raho (1956)] - Greet the Morning with Raag Bhairav

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhXbqQgioMI)

Tum Toh Pyar Ho (Rafi & Lata - Sehra, - 1963) - The Magical Maru Bihag

Tere Sur Aur Mere Geet - the coming together of Vasant Desai, Bismillah Khan and Lata Mangeshkar

Radha Na Bole Na Bole (Azad - 1955), The magic of simplicity

Should We Allow Pakistani Actors to Divide Us?

Before I say anything on this contentious subject, here are a few confessions. I have watched three serials and three films, including a Pakistani film, starring Fawad Khan and I am an admirer of his acting. I also admire Mahera Khan for her role in ‘Humsafar’. I have grown up listening to Mehdi Hassan, Ghulam Ali and Abida Parveen. I would love to watch Pakistani actors but, for now, I am not in favour of allowing them to work in India. I would pray for a situation of normalcy in the relation between two countries so that the two countries can have reciprocal – I repeat, reciprocal – traffic in cultural ties.

Let us consider some dimensions of the issue related to Pakistani artists working in India. After all it is a relatively recent phenomenon.

The Background:
After the partition in 1947, Pakistan tried to match India – as a rival – in everything, including cinema and music. Pakistan very quickly set up infrastructure to match the film industry in India. The film and music industries of the two countries grew and blossomed, independently of and parallel to each other. So, while we had our Dilip Kumar-Raj Kapoor- Dev Anand- Rajendra Kumar, they had their Mohammad Ali, Waheed Murad and Nadeem. While our music scaled the heights with Rafi-Kishore-Mukesh-Talat and others, they had their own Mehdi Hassan, Ahmad Rushdi and Masood Rana. We had our Lata-Asha and they had their ‘Malika-e-Tarannum’ and Runa Laila (till the creation of Bangladesh). We had Waheeda Rahman, Vaijayanti Mala and Meena Kumari, they had their Bushra Ansari, Tamanna and Zeba.

One would wonder why it never occurred to anybody in the Hindi film industry to invite the legendary Mehdi Hassan to sing or Mohammad Ali and Zeba to act in the Hindi films during the 60s and 70s. I don’t think anybody believes that suddenly the pool of talent has dried up in India or that Atif Aslam and Ali Zafar are better singers than Mehdi Hassan. So, what has changed?

Let us try to understand. The creation of Pakistan was accompanied by a lot of bad blood, made worse because of the Kashmir issue. So, to start with any cultural ties were neither discussed nor debated.  There was a complete ban of Indian films, which existed since 1952 in West Pakistan and since 1962 in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). It was exercised rigorously after the conflict of 1965. Pakistani cinemas did not suffer much from the decision to remove the films and instead received better viewership. So, till the early 1970s, while the film industry in Pakistan flourished, nobody ever felt any need to look for alternative avenues to work. On the Indian side too, there was no visible desire or appetite to have Pakistani artists to work here. In all probability there must have existed a fear of backlash considering the persistent hostilities and two wars (in 1965 and 1971). With Mrs. Gandhi in power, nobody would have dared to question her secular credentials on the basis of her tough stance on Pakistan. Even the bilateral cricketing ties between two countries remained suspended between 1962 and 1978.

The 1970s witnessed the beginning of a transformation of the Pakistani society. In spite of the 1971 debacle the Pakistani army became the strongest institution in the country and it also started encouraging a more puritan form of Islam to perpetuate its hold on power. Zia ul Haq very actively encouraged the Mullahs.  Strict laws, based upon ultra-conservative jurisprudence, became an obstacle to the industry's growth. Such puritanism slowly started choking creative art and cinema and there was huge decline in the avenues for artistic expression since the mid-1970s. A stage came when an industry that once produced an average of 80 films annually, was struggling to even churn out more than two films a year. Although there are visible signs of revival of the Pakistani film industry in the last 3-4 years, the chaotic, terrorism-infested, landscape would always keep people apprehensive about the future.

So, to Pakistani artists India would appear to be the natural alternative place to seek work – for artistic expression as well as for earning. Incidentally, they found some willing takers in Bollywood who engaged them. As a matter of fact Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has sung more songs in Hindi films during the last few years than Sonu Nigam, by no means less accomplished if not more. Even a much less talented Atif Aslam got more work that most Indian singers.

The Indian Side of the Story
While Pakistani society has been going down the road of Islamization, on the Indian side too several significant changes have taken place.  The 1990s witnessed the emergence of right wing politics as a potent force in India.  As a counter move there has been a tendency to loosely define everything other than the right wing party or its policies as ‘secular’.  So, while we frequently witness opposition by some parties to Pakistani artists working in India, the supporters denounce it as “Ultra Patriotism” or “Hyper Nationalism”.  In fact, as if with vengeance, the so called seculars have shown strong determination to invite Pakistani artists to work in Bollywood in the name of arguments like ‘freedom of expression’, ‘art-has-no-boundaries’ and ‘aman-ki-asha’ etc. People like Mahesh Bhatt and Karan Johar have been at the forefront but there are many like them.

There is another angle. Though nobody would admit, for some people secularism has become synonymous with being Pro-Pakistan. This is probably the most illogical and absurd version of secularism. They view that they are duty bound to be pro Pakistan if they have to oppose what they describe as Hindutva. Taking a dispassionate view, we should be simply viewing Pakistan as a politically and militarily hostile country whose being an Islamic country is incidental.  Karan Johar and Mahesh Bhatt would never admit that their love for Pakistani artists is not as much out of genuine desire to improve relations between the two countries, as to appeal to a particular community in India.

As a matter of fact few would debate that even though Pakistan is an ‘enemy’ country (at least right now), every Pakistani individual is not an enemy. I am sure most of the people on the other side think so too, as is evident from the warmth and hospitality shown to Indian visitors during normal times. It is also true that art knows no boundaries. Our own people like Om Puri, Kabir Bedi, Victor Banerjee, Anil Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra (to name a few) have worked in foreign films. However, the instances of Indians working in Pakistan, Like Naseeruddin Shah in ‘Kuda Ke Liye’ are rare. Still, in my view, there is a strong case for not working with Pakistani artists – for now.

How is the current situation different from any other time?

The hostility between the two countries is far more intense than at any other time in the past and it is not dormant or covert; it is just short of a war. It is in the open. Do we need a stronger evidence than a Minister of Pakistan threatening us with annihilation? From our side, the official diplomacy has been very stern and combative towards isolating Pakistan. Can cultural ties continue unaffected? Will it not give a message that while the Government is trying to be tough with Pakistan, at people-to-people level everything is normal? Can we afford that? Is it only the Government’s battle and all those opposed to the ruling party (for whatever reasons) should follow a different line?

Further, we are duty bound to demonstrate to our security forces that we care. The soldiers on each side of the border have no interpersonal enmity. They are fighting on behalf of their people. The ‘people’ – including Karan Johar and Fawad Khan - have to stand solidly behind their respective armies. Any efforts for normalization of relations will succeed only when the guns go silent. The onus of normalization rests with the civil society on both sides. But, I am afraid, Fawad Khan, as a part of the civil society, is too small to influence the Pakistani Army, which is supreme. So, let us not abuse individuals for not going against the official line of their country.

To all those who plead for cultural ties to continue in spite of the hostility, I have a question: Can anybody tell what type of cultural exchange existed between Germany and the UK or France during the World War?

Karan Johar and his ilk have failed to realise one major difference. This time it is not an intolerance attributable to BJP, Shiv Sena or MNS. Their initial arrogance in brushing aside the issue as ‘communal’ has mobilized a much larger chunk of the population. And, let it be known to them, in spite of 24X7 TV, only a small portion of the population is enamored by Fawad Khan and Mahera Khan. The death of our soldiers and the atrocities of the Pak-sponsored terrorists are real and tangible; Fawad, Mahera and Atif are not.
